W.A. Bakers’ ironmonger shop once stood on the opposite side of this street. From 1880 to 1957 they furnished Newport with metal goods, created in its Westgate Works beside the docks.
Bakers stocked everything from bedsteads and bikes to guns and ammunition. A special showroom displayed iron kitchenware. As you pass by the balconies, gates and railings of Newport, think how many of them may have been cast in Baker’s foundry.
