Bridges over the Usk

A dramatic addition to the skyline

The wide mouth of the Usk flows into the Severn Estuary and the Bristol Channel.  The river was once the town’s economic lifeline, but also a major obstacle for pedestrians.  Stepping stones at low tide were once the only way to walk across, leading you from settlement to countryside.

The dramatic Newport City footbridge was opened on 12 September 2006, exactly 100 years after the Transporter Bridge further down the river.  The two tall metal A-frame masts evoke the cranes which once stood on wharves on this stretch of river.

The award-winning footbridge provides an excellent link for pedestrians and cyclists in to the city centre, and was an early success for the regeneration plans in the city.
