Newport’s street layout has always evolved.
In the 1700s Commercial Street faded into cart track. Since then streets have come and gone, making way for wharves and railways, docks and shops.
Most of what you see here now was built in the 1960s when a new vision of urban living swept away old landmarks. Now our square is changing again and regeneration plans are underway. Shoppers and leisure seekers will find brand new city centre facilities.
