Wharves and jetties

The riverside view

An early photograph of the River Severn Low tide has left ships stranded in the mud... ...except for one that is in a dry dock for repairs. The river was lined with warehouses and storage ...piled high with wood, coal and other goods. The wharves were used in the age of sail... The wharves were used in the age of sail... ...and into the age of mechanical power.

In 1796, a new canal connected Newport to the collieries and ironworks of the valleys.  The town expanded rapidly, becoming a major port for shipping coal and industrial goods.

Everything came and went by ship, loaded from wharves and jetties along the river.
