In 1841, a Mechanic’s Institute was set up in the old Town Hall, offering courses on all sorts of subjects. For two shillings (10p) and a quarter, working men and women could attend any lecture. The School of Art and Science (known as the Art School) was set up in 1870. In 1910 the Art School became the Newport Technical Institute, based in Clarence Place. Caerleon College opened in 1914, and was originally called Monmouthshire Training College, educating only men. The college began admitting women in 1962. It was so popular it expanded to a larger site in Caerleon. The tradition of workers’ education continued at the Lysaght Institute, established in 1928. Like many adult education institutes it was established by employees and their employer, to help workers learn and socialise. In this case, by the workers at the Orb Steelworks, John Lysaght Ltd. Many of Newport’s educational institutes merged in the 1970s, including Caerleon College and Newport College of Art and Design. These later became part of the University of Wales as the University of Wales College.
