Dock Street

The hub for dealers and dockers

The Custom House collected tax on imported goods.

Dock Street was at the heart of Newport’s maritime trade. The wheelers, dealers and high rollers of the shipping trade kept impressive offices here, with the wharves close by.

Sailors and dockers could walk to work from their homes in neighbouring streets. In Newport’s docks coal export thrived, coal merchants and brokers became wealthy men.

The street celebrates its action-packedpast with modern art works. Metal strips line the pavement listing surprising Newport dates.

Just behind you, Andy Hazell’s ‘Whirlwind’ sculpture commemorates the sweeping changes the street has seen.
