From Jamaica to The Pill

Roy's Journey

show transcript

Roy describes his journey from Jamaica to Newport in the 1950s, at the age of nineteen.

He talks about the existing Somali and African residents in Newport, a legacy of the Merchant Navy, and how he was one of about 12 Caribbean families in the area.  He says he was the youngest man on the ship, the SS Begona, which was a converted troop transport.  These ships were used after the war to bring migrants to Britain to help rebuild the country.
