The Indoor Market

The city’s first commercial centre

Fresh fruit and vegetables from the market greengrocer

Guess how long Newport has had a market... More than 700 years! Since the 1700s Newport’s colourful market has been a draw for shoppers. It was held in this spot from the 1800s. The midday ringing of the market bell meant trading could begin. Local dairy, grain, fowl, fish, bread and ale lined the stalls, and noisy cattle filled the neighbouring pavements. Candles cast light on meat cuts to prove their freshness. Nasty carcases were burned or thrown into the Usk.

Today the market is Grade II listed and stands in a conservation area.

Look up and see the 120m² stained glass window, designed by Catrin Jones and installed in 2003. Catrin says, ‘using coloured enamels, the design illustrates the vibrancy of the market place’. Her creation can be seen more closely from the recently renovated upstairs gallery.
