Boysen was Town Sculptor for Newport in the mid 1990s and felt that a statue referencing the foundation of Newport’s first church by St Gwynllw was an excellent way of capturing the city’s early history.  The model of the sculpture took three years to make, first in clay and then cast in plaster with a wax coating to allow details to be added.  The final casting into bronze took four months, and Boysen describes the unveiling in 1996 as ‘a very great occasion’
