Riverfront Theatre and Arts Centre

A landmark cultural centre

The Riverfront Theatre and Arts Centre lights up at night

The striking blue, angular building you can see on the west bank of the Usk is the Riverfront Theatre and Arts Centre, designed by architects Austin-Smith:Lord and opened in 2004.

The centre hosts theatre, dance, film and more. You can take a workshop in circus skills or ceramics, and learn to DJ in the recording studio. Local artists exhibit in the art gallery and entry is free. Sunsets and local birdlife can be seen from the cafe terrace.

During the building of the centre, the 'Newport Ship', a 15th century vessel was found sunk in a small inlet on the banks of the Usk. The Ship is the most complete example of a 15th century vessel ever found and is undergoing an exciting restoration.

If you would like to view the ship and find out more, visit open days at the Newport Ship Project, Unit 22, Maesglas Industrial Estate.
