Newport may not have a shipbreaking industry any more, but it is a major player in metal recycling.

Thousands of tons of discarded material are delivered by train every month

Their destination is Sims Metal Management by the docks.

Sims accepts everything from vacuum cleaners to stretch limousines.

Large items like cars are shredded in seconds into a pile of dismembered steel.

The metal is separated from other materials and sorted by type.

The metal waste is loaded on to ships at the dockside...

...and sent off to clients around the world to be melted down and reused.

Newport is home to the world’s largest industrial car shredding machine, located on the dockside with access by sea, road and rail.
