Havelock St Presbyterian Church

An unusual assortment of stone

An unusual assortment of stone

Across the road, the church’s strict symmetrical design is typical of its time - picturesque and classical.

Its walls, put up in 1864, are a hotchpotch of ballast stones, dropped off by docking ships. You can see Bath Stone, Pennant Sandstone, Old Red Sandstone, Devonian Limestone and more.

Badly behaved boys weren’t tolerated behind the walls of Havelock Street Presbyterian Church. The Welsh Boys Brigade movement began here in 1887, encouraging ‘habits of reverence, self-respect and all that tends towards a true Christian manliness’. The Brigade had a strict code of conduct, and included gymnastics, drill and a summer camp at Caerleon.
