The Islamic community in Newport goes back over half a century, and is careful to teach each new generation about its culture and traditions. The madrasa (school) situated just down Stow Hill from here plays an important role in this teaching.
Children attend their madrasa every day after school to study the Qu’ran, Islamic History, Ethics and Religious Law.
As well as learning about their own religion, the children also discuss how to behave appropriately when living within a Christian culture. Respect and tolerance for different religious beliefs is central part of mainstream Islam.
