The Roman fortress at Caerleon is one of Britain's most remarkable archaeological sites from the era. The large garrison settlement here was eventually abandoned, but no medieval town replaced it. The Roman foundations have lain undisturbed until recent times.
Caerleon is a significant site in the story on King Arthur, legend has it that Caerleon was the first of King Arthur's courts, the amphitheatre allegedly being the site of the Round Table.
