Newport Leisure Centre

Part of the city’s love of swimming

Newport schoolchildren take advantage of the free bathing facilities offered by Monmouthshire Canal at Allt-yr-yn

The pool inside Newport Leisure Centre has let Newport people practice on one of their most popular pastimes since 1985. In 1926 men and women bathed together in the Stow Hill outdoor baths for the first time.

From the 20s to the 60s there were lidos at Bulmore Farm Caerleon and Alltyryn.

The Alltyryn lido sat low on the side of a wooded slope in the grounds of Alltyryn House, where the house's original spring and ornamental pools had been. People travelled from Newport to swim for the day in the rocky-bottomed lido beside fish and frogs.
