Building access

Entrance to the building is on the flat, at the same level as John Frost Square. There are automatic doors to the building which is shared with the library. A staffed information desk is located on the 1st floor.

There are 31 steps with one turn to floor 1 and another 43 steps with three turns to floor 3.

Within the museum there are two staircases to the mezzanine balcony. Each has 19 steps with one turn. These stairs have open risers.

The museum has an open entrance. 

The doors to the art gallery on floor 3 open outwards onto the foyer.

There are chairs with arm rests throughout the museum and art gallery.

Lighting levels in the museum are lower than normal because many of the objects on display are sensitive to light. Please speak to a member of staff if this is a problem for you.

There is one permanent audio visual in the museum. It is located in the Chartist display at the back of the museum.

  • Newport Museum and Art Gallery welcomes everyone, it is free to visit and to attend talks and special events.
  • The museum is on floor 1 and the mezzanine balcony with lift access, please ask a member of staff for help.
  • The art gallery is on floor 3 with lift access. 
  • Assistance dogs are welcome and water can be provided for your dog.
  • Accessible toilets are on floor 1.
  • There are drinks and snacks vending machines on floor 3.
  • There is an emergency wheelchair charger point on the ground floor next to the entrance.
  • Wheelchairs can be borrowed for use around the museum and art gallery. 

Emergency evacuation

Alarms have voice instructions. Staff will help visitors who require support to leave the building. Staff are also trained to use evac chairs. 

Getting to and from Newport Museum and Art Gallery

Drop off point - there is no direct vehicular access to the front of the building.

Access can be arranged via a designated route through the pedestrianised area of the city.

Please contact the museum in advance of your visit so that we can make arrangements. 

If you are able, the nearest car park is Kingsway. Once you have parked it is only a very short walk (approx 400m) from the car park to the museum entrance. The route is all on the same level.
